Trygve Lie, Norwegian politician, making a speech, Stockholm, Sweden, 3 March 1939. Lie (1896-1968) was Norway's Minister of Justice and the Police at the time of the photograph. He served as Foreign Minister from 1941 until 1946, when he was appointed the United Nations' first Secretary General, a post he held until 1952.
