Broken ankle. Close-up of swelling around the broken ankle of a 36 year old woman. She has suffered a lateral malleolar fracture. The lateral malleolus is the lower part of the fibula, the thinner of the two lower leg bones. Such a fracture causes severe pain in the joint, which drastically reduces mobility. It is treated by setting the bones in their correct positions and immobilising the joint until they heal.
