Olfactory epithelium. Computer artwork showing the structure of the specialised layer of tissue that lines the inside of the nasal cavity and is involved in smell. In humans, the olfactory epithelium measures about 1 square centimetre (in each nostril) and sits on the roof of the nasal cavity about 7 cm above and behind the nostrils. Olfaction, along with taste, is a form of chemoreception, which turns a chemical stimulus (in this case odours) into a nerve impulse. For the labelled diagram see image: C008/9745.
