I have not amounted to much in life, heremarked, sadly; and I suppose it is well that I should fall in battle. Myfamily and friends will have the consolation that, at least, I died an honorable death it was—a glorious death—that many a man wouldgladly die for the fame it would bring him. The following characteristic incident is related of this young hero whilehis regiment was stationed at San Antonio, Texas: While drilling one day,the regiment was dashing across a field near the hut of a Mexican family, when a four-vear-old child was discovered in the way of the advancing 502 AMERICAS WAR FOR HUMANITY column. The riders trembled at the sight of the little one, for whom deathseemed certain. Fish, however, retained his presence of mind, and plung-ing forward ahead of his companions, picked up the child while his horsewas galloping at full speed. It was a trick of horsemanship he had learnedin SIvRGKANT FISH BREAKING A WILD BRONCHO. Colonel Roosevelt complimented him for his gallantry. That night apoor Mexican woman appeared at the camp of the Rough Riders and gaveFish a pewter image of St. Joseph, which the child had carried about hersince she was baptized. It was supposed to possess the power of warding off INVASION OF CUBA. 503 danger. The woman enjoined upon Fish to wear the image about his he lost it, she said, he would be in greater danger than if he had neverseen it. That is the story, at least, that comes from San Antonio. It is apretty little incident to weave about the last chapter of the young heros life. He took the image. Some accounts say he lost it, others that, in hishappy-go-lucky, indifferent manner, he threw it away. At any rate, it wasnot on his person when he was killed
