David Livingstone (1813-1873) who rose from humble beginnings to become a Scottish Congregationalist pioneer medical missionary with the London Missionary Society. He became one of the most famous of the European missionaries and explorers who opened up the interior of Africa during the mid 1800s and whose meeting with Stamley gave rise to the popular quotation, "Dr. Livingstone, I presume?"
