Winter buds acuminate, gla- brous ; leaves slender-petioled, ovate, mostly rounded at the base, acuminate at the apex, 2'-4' long, glabrous on both sides, or rarely a little pubescent beneath, sharply serrulate; petioles often broad- ened and wavy-margined, o/'-l2" long; cyme sessile, several-rayed, 2's' broad; drupes oval to subglobose, bluish-black with a bloom, sweet and edible, s"-6" long; stone very flat, circular or oval. In rich soil, Quebec to Hudson Bay, Manitoba, New Jersey, along the Allegha- nies to Georgia, and to Indiana, Kansas and Colorado. Wood orange-brown, hard; weight 45 lbs. to the cubic foot. May-June. Fruit ripe in October. Nanny-bush. Black thorn or haw. Nanny-plum. Tea-plant (Wis.).
