Click beetle (Athous haemorrhoidalis). This is one of many species of click beetle found in the UK. It measures up to 15mm long and is found in meadows and hedgerows throughout the UK. The adults are seen from May to August. The larvae feed on roots and can become a pest of root crops. The click beetles are so-called because of the sound they make when they jump. They have a hinge on their thorax which acts like a spring and enables them to escape danger or right themselves when they are on their backs.
