From the circum-stance that they are completely hiddenin the picture by the hands holdingthem, it may be inferred that they weresmall instruments with flat jaws, such asare used for twisting wire. Moreover,the picture intimates that the forkedstick had no bark on it. At all events,it is evident that this is a case of apply-ing a brake on the axle of revolution(the place where it can have the smallesteffect), and of giving to this brake the oO.
