A black granite monument of José Julián Martí Pérez, Cuba’s national hero (1853-1895) on his horse in Plaza 13 de Marzo in Havana, Cuba. He was a nationalist, poet, philosopher, essayist, journalist, translator, professor, and publisher. José Julián Martí Pérez, born in Havana, is considered a Cuban national hero because of his role in the liberation of his country from Spain. He spent his short life, fighting for Cuban independence against Spanish rule and was killed by Spanish troops in 1895. He was also an important figure in Latin American literature. The international airport in Havana is also named after him.
