Horizontally bedded strata of Blue Lias at Monmouth Beach, Lyme Regis, Dorset, UK. These alternating limestones and clays were laid down in a deep geosynclinal basin, where thick deposits of sediments entombed Jurassic marine animals. As the conditions were anoxic the preservation of the fossils is very good, revealing fine structural detail.
