This illustration shows life in Abbasid times, with a camel caravan at an oasis represented by the tree. The Arabic text is a conventional prayer asking God for mercy, protection, blessings, and the like. The text goes "Oh God, protect my belongings and my destiny. God be my leading power. God be my savior, grant me security and safety, make me choose your path, provide me with health and wealth." The time period is that of the Abbasid Empire, whose dates are 720-1258. This miniature by al Hariri, an Arabian scholar of Arabic language and literature and a government official who lived in the 13th century , is now housed in Cairo, Egypt.
