Illustration - smallpox virus cell membrane


This illustration depicts the smallpox virus, one of the most complex type of animal virus known. The structure of the smallpox virus includes one strand of double stranded DNA contained in a rounded biconcave brick like core (shown in purple). This core is surrounded by several layers of host cell membrane (shown in aqua), which in turn is surrounded by an outer protein coat (shown in yellow). There is increasing concern about its potential use as a biological weapon.
