Iodomethane reaction. At left a drop of acetone has been added to a solution of triiodomethane and forms a precipitate. At right is a positive result, with the pale yellow precipitate of triiodomethane (iodoform), which is given by either an aldehyde or ketone. Ethanal is the only aldehyde to give a positive reaction but many ketones react. Acetone is the simplest ketone.
