Loss of life or serious accident,which were always imminent, had been averted by extreme care,and we were now within 15 miles of our destination and in good con-dition and ready to take up the control of the situation at Point Bar-row, as we had been directed. March 29 was a beautiful, clear morning, cold and sharp, but witha cloudless sky and little or no wind, and, when we drew up at thesettlement at Point Barrow it seemed as if nature was trying to makeamends at last for the hard trial she had given us from Point Hopeup the coast.
