Tn 1808 he was elected to the assembly and re-elected in 1809—Ii_i2-i3. In 1814 he was elected to congress, and in 1847 ^t^ i849to the Supreme Court. The rival candidate for judicial honors wasJudge Fine, a lawyer of ability and popularity, but Judge Cadys greatstrength gave but little chance to any opposition. Judge Cady had twosons who died early in life, and six daughters, all of whom were charac-terized by more than usual intellectual endowment, and one of whom—Elizabeth Cady Stanton—has reached prominence in discussing someof the leading questions of the day.
