His career as a soldierwas creditable. While still in theservice, in 1864, he was elected toCongress, and was governor of Ohioin 1867, 1869, and again in popularity as chief magistrateof one of the leading States led tohis nomination to the presidency,to which, however, it must be con-ceded, he had not a clear died at Fremont, Ohio, January17, 1893.
