Nearthe coast of Herald Island they met a whaling ship, and sent a boat onboard; it returned shortly, with the announcement that the whaler hadbeen successful and was nearly full of oil; one whale more would com-plete the cargo, and then she would steer for San Francisco. The Gambetta alsosent a bag of letters, and as soon as they were on board, the whaler filledaway and steered to the southward. Her captain was confident that ina few days his would be complete, and he hoped soon to be out ofthe Arctic Ocean, and headed fur home.
