But, besides his devotion to politics, Sir Robert found leisure toattend to the pursuits of literature, and the promotion of science and art. Hisown literary attainments were extensive ; and his taste in the fine arts wasattested by the magnificent gallery which he had collected. From theresources of his own wealth, he munificently encouraged the exertions of allthose engaged in the pursuits of literature and art: as a dispenser of the pub-lic bounty, he caused it to flow liberally in their direction ; and not a few ofthe families of men of genius were rescued from poverty by his prompt andjudicious aid. 560 ADONIRAM ADONIRAM JUDSON. THIS distinguished pioneer in the American Foreign Missionary enterprise,was born August 9, 1788, at Maiden, in Massachusetts, where his father wassettled as pastor of the congregational church. At an early age, he completedhis preparatory studies, and entered Brown university, whence he graduated in1807. At this time he inclined to deism, hut soon after his views of divimitruth were changed, and he entered the theological seminary at Andover to pre-pare for the ministry. While engaged in his theological studies his attentionwas directed to the subject of foreign missions, and he determined to devotehimself to that cause.
