Tibetan doctor (Amchi) preparing to treat a nun suffering from continuous migraine using a technique known as moxibustion (combustion of the downy covering of the leaves of the herb, Artemisia moxa) in combination with acupuncture. A measurement is taken to determined the correct point on the head into which a golden needle is inserted. The needle is then heated from above by burning the herb artemisia (seen here), which includes the common wormwood, mugwort & southernwood plants. Various points on the body can be treated in this manner, according to the nature of the disease. The doctor is working in Tarr village, Ladakh, India.
