It is good for me to hear him. If I can keep the resolution I will go there regularly. I generally leave with that wish and intention, but having got out of the way of church-going, I allow it to drift into non-performance. Let me put down, fragmentally, what I carried away to night. The text was, according to Chapin ?s wont, from the words of Christ: ?ǣHe maketh the rain to fall upon the just and the unjust, the evil and the good. ? The sermon dwelt on the catholicity of God ?s love, and of our power of imitating him. This, Chapin said, was Christ ?s ideal. No barren goodness springing from a honesty-the-best-policy-religion, no eye-for-eye, tooth-for-tooth code of morals but a love for the evil-doer, a love for goodness for it ?s own sake, even if it prove not the best policy ? as it often does in this world. For a man ?s life may be, outwardly, the greatest success, yet truly, the saddest of failures; and vice versa. Christ ?s code of morality looked behind actions, at motives. ?ǣBe ye good, as God, also, is good. ? Writers have troubled themselves to define Man ?
