Hisfather, Patrick Calhoun, had been brought to America in1733, when but six years old; and after a short sojourn inWestern Pennsylvania and Virginia, had been taken to Abbe-ville county, on the Cherokee frontier, in the northern part ofSouth Carolina. During the Revolution he was an activeWhig. His son John was born on the 18th of March, his nineteenth year he began his preparation for college,studying with his brother-in-law, Rev.
