In 1852 Massachusetts established at Monson, near Palmer, onthe Boston and Albany Railroad, one of three almshouses designedunder the peculiar settlement law of the state for the care of statepaupers. Later, when state paupers were transferred to the alms-houses at Tewksbury and Bridgewater, the unoccupied buildingswere placed at the disposal of the State Primary School for the children of this school were placed in familiesand the school was discontinued. In 1895 the Massachusetts Hospital for Epileptics was estab-lished for the care and treatment of 200 adult epileptics and wasendowed with the personal property, buildings and lands formerlybelonging to the above-named institutions. The establishment ofthe Massachusetts Hospital for Epileptics had been the outcomeof an agitation initiated by Drs. W. N. Bullard and H. R. Sted-man
