Her influence hasbeen salutary, not selfish, and the oppressed of everynation live in hope of freedom, being inspired by the exam-ple of her three sons—Mason, Jefferson, Washington—whogave to the world the Declaration of Independence. Frombeginning to end it was the work of Virginia. A Virginiaplanter conceived it; a Virginia lawyer drafted it; and aVirginia Soldier defended it and made it a living ;MM>^^^ YV7HEN the three ships, the GoodPoynt W Speed, Susan Constant and ^^^?^* Discoverer, bearing the first settlersreached the Chespeake Bay (Mother of Waters) theywere driven by violent storms to the western shore of theBay, where shelter was found, and in commemorationthereof, they named the place Poynt Comfort. When the early settlers in America obtained royal char-ters from King James I, the government of the VirginiaColony was intrusted to the London Company, of whichCapt. John Smith and Bartholomew Gosnold were the lead-ing spirits. In 1609 King James enlarged the boundariesof the Southern Colony. The lines were run from PoyntComfort and included all the territory 200 miles toto the North and 200 miles to the South, of Old Poynt,and to reach up into the land from sea to sea. Afterwards Poynt Comfort was called Old Point Com-fort, to distinguish it from New Point Comfort, just acrosstht^ Bay near Cape Charles. Land
