Chinese fishing nets at dusk in Fort Cochin, Kerala, India
Chinese net immersed in water before raising - to catch fish - Cochin, south India. The net will be raised when fishes strangle in it. The Chinese fishing nets (Cheena vala) of Kochi (formerly known as Cochin), a city in Kerala, south India are fixed land installations for an unusual form of fishing. Each structure is at least 10m high and comprises a cantilever with an outstretched net suspended over the sea and large stones suspended from ropes as counterweights at the other end. Each installation is operated by a team of up to six fishermen. Some suppose that the nets were introduced by the Chinese explorer Zheng He.
