JamesParker was a descendant in the fifth generation from CaptainJames Parker, an original proprietor of Groton, who was muchdistinguished in early Colonial times. At fourteen years of age,Leonard Moody commenced his preparation for college underthe instruction of Hon. Caleb Butler, at that time preceptor ofGroton Academy. It is a singular fact that he afterwards suc-ceeded this distinguished gentleman and scholar as the secondchairman of the Middlesex County Commissioners, Mr. Butlerbeing the first. He graduated at Dartmouth in 1808, at the ageof nineteen, selecting the practice of law as his profession, read-ing two years with Hon. Abijah Bigelow, M. C, of Leominster,and one year with Hon.
