There have been reports of football matches in west and central Europe since the 16th Century In many places those were wild village fights But football was also known at the royal houses The game anjoyed a special popularity in central Italy Here it was developed into a tournament game with firm rules and great elegance It is still being played in Florence now This kind of football called calcio is also similar to today s rugby in which hands play is also permitted The basics of today s football game were invented in Florence the halfway line the team kits the referee and linesman striker defender and winger as well as the restriction to a particular location and a certain lenght of time In the past it was just played from one village to the next however long it took Exhibition The fascination of football April 30th until November 26th 2006 The exhibition Faszination Fußball will stretch across four exhibition halls of the Museum of Ethnology Hamburg measuring about 1 000 m2 The main objective of this project is to find answers to the following questions Why does football have such an impact on today s world and what makes it so fascinating Trying to find explanations our team has taken up research on an international basis The Exhibition The honourable museum is transformed into a football stadium Japanese roof football grounds are set up in front of the building inviting to play After passing old fashioned wooden cashier desks and play announcement boards the visitor walks into the marble entrance hall Cloakrooms are turned into betting offices and cash desks In the middle of the entrance hall a circle is drawn around a football just like in the centre of a football field African tabletop football and devices measuring the velocity of shots invite you to make an attempt Football matches are shown on television screens You get the feeling of being in a Scottish pub or in a stadium Either way you simply want to stay You ll experience a totally new and exciting side
