Neither he nor his friends hadsanguine hopes of overcoming the majority of 48,000 by which theDemocrats had carried the State in 1867. Subsequent investi-gations made by a Congressional Committee disclosed the fact, thatmore than 30,000 fraudulent votes were cast for the Democraticcandidates in the citv of New York. 110.
