The Monument of Discoveries is one of the most popular tourist attractions of Lisbon. Located in Belém in the Western part of the city it celebrates the achievements of Vasco da Gama and other Portugese discoverers of past times. The massive stone sculpture resembling a historic ship was erected directly on the shores of the Tejo river, where all ships entering Lisbon harbour would pass by.
