Manyof the Confederates paid with their lives for their fool-hardiness. The noise of battle was fearfully awful,with shrieking shot, exploding shells, and the groans ofthe wounded and dying. Missiles of all kinds, dustand powder-smoke filled the air. This state of thingscontinued for hours, then quieted down. About threeoclock reenforcements were sent, and an attempt wasmade to follow up our victory, but it proved that time the few left of our Regiment had securedpartial safety till darknesswould assist us to fall backto the rear.
