Fly agaric mushroom. Three fly agaric mushrooms, Amanita muscaria. The two with a globose or hemispherical cap (middle and left) are developing. The mushroom on the right with the flattened cap is fully grown. The cap (8-20cm across) is covered with white pyramidal warts which may be washed off by rain. Fly agaric is so called because of the medieval custom of soaking the cap in milk to kill flies. The mushroom has strong hallucinogenic and intoxicant effects on humans too. The effects of this mushroom are unpredictable due to natural variations in the levels of the toxic agent (ibotenic acid). Photographed on Queen Charlotte Island, Canada.
