Smoot (born 1945), US astrophysicist and cosmologist, viewing the Planck space observatory. Smoot shared the 2006 Nobel Prize in Physics with John C. Mather for the discovery of the blackbody form and anisotropy of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB), the radiation left over from the Big Bang. Planck, an unmanned spacecraft designed to study the CMB, was launched on 14 May 2009. Photographed in the Alcatel Alenia Space facilities in Cannes, France, on 1 February 2007.
