Haarlem Hofje van Staats. Coat of Arms. Detail of the facade and clocktower of the entrance building. Holland. The Netherlands.
The Hofje van Staats was built from July 1730 to 1733 from the legacy of textile merchant Ysbrand Staats. The designer was architect Hendrik de Werff. The main sculptor was Gerrit van Heerstal, who may well have sculpted or designed these coat of arms of the family Staats. It originally had houses for 29 single elder women. In 1990 this was reduced to 20. In size it is one of the larger hofjes. Its bicycle shed once was the mortuary. Haarlem is one of the cities in the Netherlands that has a number of hofjes (almshouses around a central courtyard) that are still in use. The first hofje in Haarlem was built in 1395. The most recent in 2001. At present 22 hofjes are in use.
