ITALY TUSCANY COLLODI The old hill village borgo The village of Collodi is located in Tuscany 60 km northwest of Florence and 20 km east of Lucca The old hill village dates from the 12th c and it was once heavily fortified because of its strategic position on the boundary between the two rival cities Florence and Lucca The imposing villa 17th c at the bottom of the old village was built for the Garzoni family in baroque style Carlo Collodi pseudonym of Carlo Lorenzini the world famous author of Pinocchio s adventures chose this pen name because Collodi was his mother s birthplace Carlo lived in Collodi as a child and he frequented the villa Garzoni where his mother worked as a maid They say that he wrote the first chapters of Pinocchio in the villa s kitchen
