Neck muscles, computer artwork. Attached to the spine and the first two ribs are the scalene muscles (posterior, medius and anterior). These muscles flex the head to the same side and elevate the first and second ribs. The muscles attached to either side of the skull (opaque at left) are the sternocleidomastoid muscles, which act to flex and rotate the neck.
