Mammalian Heart. In the mammalian heart digitalis and its allies:ils() allcct the nnisch- directly, bnt tins is complicated by inhibitoryaction, which is absent in the frog. The nuiscular action is seen in the THE DIGITALIS SERIES 401 mammal almost only in the increase in the contractility and excital)ility, while there is little evidence of the depressed conduction which hasbeen described in the frogs heart. Symptoms of reduced conductionoccur in the mammal it is true, but here they arise for the most partfrom inhibitory stimulation and not from direct muscular effects. The action of digitalis and its allies on the mammalian heart may be(li\-ided into three stages, of which the first and third are always de-veloped when sufRcient quantities are administered. The second stagemay be absent in certain circumstances, but is also generally presentin poisoning. Fig. 46.
