The officials,together with a party of in-vited guests, entered thesouth tube through the en-trance shaft near Fifteenth Street, Jersey City, from which allof the work of construction has been carried on, and rodethrough to the barrier wall at the New York end, where W. , president of the Hudson Companies, operated thehydraulic jacks which forced the final opening through thewall and permitted the party to make the first complete tripthrough the tube. *. They have no crosscommunication at any point between the shore shafts. Thegreatest depth below mean tide is near the middle of the river,where the tubes are 15 ft. below the bed of the river; thedepth of water at that point is 65 ft. The New York approaches to the tunnels have been extendedto some distance eastward from the Morton Street shaft. Con-struction upon these tunnels is being carried out upon theshield and hydraulic jack method, similar to that for the tubesbeneath the river, and the shields for the approaches have nowreached Christopher Street.
