Antic Hospital de Santa Maria. Gothic. Lleida.

The building of the old Santa Maria Hospital of Lleida, located on Main Street in front of the New Cathedral is an example of Catalan Gothic civil architecture of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. It is a building of simple structure with a square courtyard also square inside. The ground floor has very thick walls to withstand the weight of the rafters and walls thinner upper floors. From the courtyard of the hospital access to a gallery with arches overhang on the first floor there is a staircase located in the northeast corner, leaning back on a rampant. The access to other floors of the building are through staircases. During the twentieth century it was proposed to transfer the building to prevent gourd view of the New Cathedral arguing that it was a building with little artistic value. To avoid building declared architectural-artistic monument, and gave space to Lleida Studies Institute (IEI), established by the Provincial Council, to ensure its maintenance. The IEI promotes scientific research, cultivation of arts and letters and guardianship issues that affect the cultural heritage of the city.
