Lere, trusting to luck that it would arrive on the 2nd of May, six officers passed Bussoin a steel-boat, amongst them Captain Dumas, a well-known African traveller. This party was but one ofmany, for owing to the unrest in Wadai the militaryforce was to be increased to 3000 men. The promptmeasures taken by the French after the unfortunateMoll affair, have certainly had a salutary effect onthe rebels. We crossed the Shari in large canoes, each of whichheld seventy loads and eighty men, whilst the oxen andasses swam alongside. These gigantic canoes are char-acteristic of the art of ship-building carried on atMafaling, and the cost of one canoe is 30 Maria-Theresathalers. Their construction is peculiar: the bows arelow and square, whilst the stern rises high into theair like that of a Viking galley. The sides are madeof rough planks held together by rushes and canoes consequently are not water - tight, andconstant baling is necessary in order to keep 89. School in Dagirmi.
