Tuskegee Airmen, members of the 332nd Fighter Group in Ramitelli, Italy, March 1945. The Tuskegee Airmen were the first African-American military aviators. Trained at the Tuskegee Army Air Field in Alabama, they flew more than 15,000 sorties in Europe and North Africa during World War II. At this time the military was racially segregated and despite being some of the best pilots in the Army Air Forces, the Tuskegee Airmen were subjected to severe discrimination.
