A 19th century sketch of the amphitheatre (spectacula) at Pompeii / Pompei (with smoking Vesuvius in the background) as it was at that time. it had was discovered buried under 4 to 6 m (13 to 20 ft) of volcanic ash and pumice from when Mount Vesuvius erupted in AD 79. Built around 70 BC, the amphitheatre is one of the earliest Roman stone-built amphitheatres to have survived and is said to have been built using the private funds of Gaius Quinctius Valgus and Marcus Porcius. It was damaged by an earthquake in 62 AD but was restored by a magistrate Cuspius Pansa and his son.
