Weather radar display sequence. Weather radar detects rainfall by sending out pulses of microwaves that are detected as they are reflected from rain drops. The Doppler effect allows both the position and movement of the rain to be mapped. The screen is displaying rainfall over the UK. The rainfall is colour-coded (key at left), from red (high) to green (low). This data is from a radar station being operated by the Met Office, the UK's national weather monitoring and forecasting service. These readings were taken at 18:00 on 1 June 1992.
