Starbirth region in Orion, infrared image. This is the Barnard 30 starbirth region. It is thought that a supernova that took place some 3 million years ago, sent shockwaves through this region of gas and dust clouds, and initiated a phase of starbirth. The colours show the presence of PAHs (polyaromatic hydrocarbons, dark red, mostly at lower left and bottom centre) and warm dust particles (pink, mostly at right and upper right). Background and foreground stars are also seen. Barnard 30 is around 1300 light years from Earth, in the constellation of Orion. This image was obtained by the Spitzer Space Telescope (SST).
