National memorial on Kreuzberg Hill designed by Karl Friedrich Schinkel commemorates the liberation of Europe from Napoleon Bonaparte & the French, Viktoriapark, Kreuzberg,Berlin The Neo-Gothic style monument commemorates the victorious campaign over Napoleon Bonaparte and the foundation stone was laid in 1818. The monument was dedicated in 1821 by King Friedrich Wilhelm III. The park was created 73 years later. In 1888, Kaiser Friedrich III decided that the monument needed surroundings that befitted it and named the park in honour of his English wife Victoria. The waterfall was the idea of Hermann Mächtig, the city’s director of parks and gardens. It is a replica of the waterfall in the Riesengebirge mountains (now known as the Krkonoše) on the border of Poland and the Czech Republic It was constructed using large rocks and is a good copy of the mountain waterfall but is powered by a pump.
