It was the mostdestructive campaign of the war, but, whether wisely or unwisely. Grant neverdeparted from his purpose to fight theenemy wherever he was found. Had hefailed in his campaign he would have beenseverely criticised and hopelessly con-demned, but after a year of terrible sus-pense he closed the war at Appomattox, and the surrender of Lee effaced everyerror of the aggressive warrior, and madehim accepted by the country and the worldas the great captain of the uKTTYbBLKU -NATIONAL LKMKTEKY.
