Ambrogio Spinola, Italian Military Leader


Don Ambrogio Spinola Doria, 1st Marquis of the Balbases (1569-1630) was an Italian aristocrat, who, as a General in Spanish service, won a number of important battles for the Spanish crown. During the Eighty Years' War he was pivotal figure at the Siege of Ostend and the Siege of Groenlo, During the Thirty Years' War he was a pivotal figure during the Palatinate campaign, Siege of JÌ_lich Siege of Bergen-op-Zoom, and the Siege of Breda. He was appointed then a Knight of the Order of the Golden Fleece in 1605. At the age of 61, with over 30 years experience in the battle fields, he died at the siege of Casale. His last recorded words were, "honor" and "reputation."
