Among his bestare A Catalogue of NorthAmerican Serpents; Mam-mals of North America.,and a Review of North American Birds. He wasassistant secretary for 28 years under JosephHenry (whom, in 1878, he succeeded) of the Smith-sonian Institution. He was the organizer and firstchief of the United States Commission of Fishand Fisheries. He was the recipient of manyhonors and medals from foreign societies andgovernments. He died at Woods Holl, Massa-chusetts, Aug. 19, SPENCER FULLERTON BAIRD.
