In the year 1362 we arefurther told that the high altar was reconstructed,and made more splendid with precious marbles andrich metals. This facade is allput on in front of the original west front, like thatat Trail, which also was to have had two westerntowers, though only one is built. But the front atCattaro is much later than that at Trail ; thearchivolt of the porch has a coffered soffit with apatera in each coffer, and its front is adorned witha border of vine-leaf scrolls mixed with amorinicoarsely carved, which cannot be older than thesixteenth century. The great rose window above isof the same date ; for its radiating shafts are flutedand twined with vine stems, fruit, and foliage,althougli they still carry trefoiled arches as if lothto break with Gothic tradition.
