Wooden ballot box used by voters in Florida in 2000 Presidential Election

This ballot box, housed in the Old Capitol Building in Tallahassee, may have contained some of the paper ballots with hanging chads that dominated news headlines immediately after the 2000 Presidential Election in Florida. Republican candidate George W Bush, governor of Texas, received fewer popular votes than Democratic candidate Albert A Gore, then the vice president, but after manual recounts, Bush won the electoral vote and the election with Florida's hotly contested 25 electoral votes. Controversy caused by faulty ballots and confusing ballot design prompted state and federal agencies to call for election reform. Many proponents of electronic voting still point to Florida's election woes in 2000 as a reason to do away with the ballot box in favor of electronic voting.
