He was elected a mem-ber of the House of Representatives in his statefor May, 1817, and the next October was chosenClerk of the same, and the next May was madeSpeaker of the House, which position he held twosessions. He was then, in 1819, elected member ofthe House of Representatives of the United Statesfor two years, and re-elected in 1821, 1823 and 1825,serving eight years in that body, being Speaker ofthe House a part of the time.
