Spanish conquistador Balboa is beheaded in Acla, Panama. Four of his are executed also, they stand behind him here.


Vasco Nunez de Balboa (1475-1519) was a Spanish conquistadcor and an explorer and governor. He led an expedition across the Isthmus of Panama to the Pacific Ocean and is credited as the first European to see the ocean from the New World. He named it the Pacific Ocean for its calm waters. Political intrigue and jealousy between Balboa and court-appointed governor Pedrarias led to Balboa's arrest by Francisco Pizaro and his beheading (pictured here) and that of four of his men in Acla, Panama .
